Feed additives

Food additives (additives) are natural, identical to natural or artificially synthesized substances that are added to the food of humans or animals as an ingredient for technological reasons: to extend the shelf life (preservatives), change the color or taste of food in relation to (to preserve and enhance the taste ), improve texture, consistency, appearance. Usually, food additives do not include substances that increase the nutritional value of products: vitamins, trace elements, amino acids.

Some additives have been used for centuries, for example, to preserve food – vinegar, salt (salting bacon, meat, fish, etc.) or the use of sulfur dioxide in some wines (E220). With the advent of processed foods in the second half of the 20th century, many other additives, both natural and artificial, were introduced.

As of 2010, more than 2800 names of food additives are known.

The widespread use of food additives required the development of their classification, the creation of application technologies, and hygienic regulation.

The FAO-WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission has proposed an interpretation of the concept of food additives: “…any substances that are not normally used as food and are not used as typical food ingredients, regardless of their nutritional value, deliberately added to food for technological purposes (including improvement of organoleptic properties) in the process of production, processing, packaging, transportation or storage of food products”.

In the European Union, for the regulation of these additives, as well as for informing consumers, each additive is assigned a unique number – an E-number. This numbering scheme is adopted and published by the International Commission Codex Alimentarius for the most common food additives in Europe.

Ukrainian legislation defines a food additive in this way – a substance that is usually not considered a food product or its component, but is added to a food product for technological purposes during the production process and, as a result, becomes an integral part of the product (the term does not include pollutants, pesticides or substances added ) foods to improve their nutritional properties).

The use of balanced feeds for feeding farm animals is not enough to obtain high-quality meat and dairy products. It is mandatory to use feed additives, the main of which are bone meal and yeast.

The daily diet of farm animals and poultry should include the following elements: vitamin A, E, D, iodine, zinc, manganese, cobalt, copper, salt, calcium, and phosphorus. All these substances are contained in sufficient quantities in the supplementary feed.

Bone meal and feed yeast

The advantage of using feed yeast in the diet of young individuals is a significant reduction in the required amount of grain, which is achieved by saturation with carbohydrates and proteins. The additive has a complex effect, including significant savings in feed consumption. The product also helps to normalize metabolic processes, thereby increasing the immunity of animals.

To develop the musculoskeletal system, bone meal is introduced into the diet. The product prevents the development of mineral deficiency, strengthens the nervous system of the animal, as well as normalizes metabolism. Due to these properties, animals become more resistant to infections and viruses.

When choosing feed additives, you should focus on the type of animal or bird, its purpose: dairy/meat breed, obtaining high-quality fur, or egg production. Age is also important, for example, for chickens and adult hens, their own diet is drawn up and additional feedings are individually selected.

It is very important to increase feeding during lactation, in cold weather, during pregnancy, when the body requires special energy consumption.

The composition must be closely monitored.

The owner must determine the purpose of the application, what exactly needs to be improved. For example, it is only necessary to increase the digestibility of the feed or additionally contribute to an increase in the pet’s weight. You can choose an additive for a specific purpose or intended to improve a whole range of indicators.

It is necessary to correctly develop a system for the use of feed additives. To do this, there are rules and instructions that owners must follow in order to get an excellent result.
