Manganese greensand
Manganese is a filter media for removing iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from the water.
Manganese Greensand (hereinafter referred to as manganese greensand) is glauconite sand enriched with manganese (II) oxides, which is capable of removing iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from the water.
It oxidizes and precipitates dissolved iron and manganese due to contact with higher manganese oxides on granules of green manganese sand. Hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to sulfur. The sediment is retained by a layer of filter media and removed by backwashing.
To restore the oxidizing ability of green manganese sand, it should be regenerated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. For normal regeneration, it is sufficient to use a solution prepared at the rate of 2-4 grams (dry weight) per liter of filter media. It is recommended to carry out intensive backwashing of filters with green manganese sand in a timely manner (without waiting for the complete depletion of their oxidizing capacity), as well as before commissioning.
The use of filters after the oxidation potential has been exhausted (untimely regeneration) will reduce the service life of the green manganese sand.
Manganese greensand is used with a periodic or continuous regeneration scheme to restore oxidation capacity. Restoration of the oxidizing capacity of the feed is carried out with a solution of potassium permanganate or sequential treatment with solutions of chlorine and potassium permanganate. At the same time, manganese (II) oxide on the surface of the granules acts as an oxidation catalyst, as well as a buffer to prevent the ingress of potassium permanganate into the consumer’s water main.
