Basic properties

Granulometric size (granulometry)

The size of the main part of the coal granules. Measured in mm or mesh USS / mesh BSS (American or English meshes).

Bulk density

The density of a specially prepared sample, this term is understood as the mass of the material filling a unit of volume under its own weight. Measured in grams per cm cube. (g/cm3).

Surface area

The surface area of a solid relative to its mass. Measured in square meters per gram of coal (m2/g).

Hardness (strength)

All manufacturers and consumers of activated carbon use significantly different methods for determining the strength. Most of the methods are based on the following principle: a sample of activated carbon is subjected to mechanical stress, and a measure of strength is the amount of fine fraction formed during the destruction of coal or grinding of average size. The amount of not destroyed coal in% is taken as a measure of strength.

Humidity

The amount of moisture contained in coal; measured in%.

Ash content

The amount of ash (sometimes considered only water-soluble) in activated carbon. Measured in%.

The pH of the aqueous extract

The pH value of an aqueous solution after boiling a sample of activated carbon in it.

Protective action

Measurement of the adsorption time of a specific gas by coal before the start of the passage of the minimum gas concentrations by the activated carbon layer. This test is applied to coals used for air purification. Most often, coal is tested for benzene or carbon tetrachloride.
